18th Street Gang

18th Street is considered the largest gang in Los Angeles, California, and is a strong armed transnational Latino criminal gang. It is estimated that there are thousands of members in Los Angeles County alone. There are approximately 200 separate individual autonomous gangs operating under the same label within separate barrios in the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay, South Los Angeles, Downtown Los Angeles, Pico Union, Inglewood, Cudahy, and Orange County, according to the latest figures from the NDIC. 18th Street have an organized hierarchy. It is unknown who is at the top. On the streets, there are the Shotcallers, their Lieutenants, and the foot-soldiers beneath them. Although the gang is well networked throughout the Los Angeles, there is no known central leadership nationally or internationally. Cliques generally function independently, but will join forces when combating rival gangs or law enforcement.

18th Street is affiliated with the Sureños, Sur 13 – groups of loosely affiliated gangs that pay tribute to the Mexican Mafia while in U.S. state and federal correctional facilities. Many Sureño gangs have rivalries with one another and the only time this rivalry is set aside is when they enter the prison system.

The gang seems to have been overrun and scattered. Some of the members have been absorbed into Michael’s Army of God.

Andy’s Braves

In the aftermath of Z-Day, Andy Bearstalker and the young people who follow him are just trying to survive and help others to do the same. This is a small, but very active group that grows slowly, but steadily. Once Bleeding Badger and Alice join with Andy, the group has a real chance at survival given their combined knowledge. Those who are at Andy’s Hunting Emporium believe it is ridiculous to hope for someone on the outside to come “save” everyone. They are planning on long-term survival from Z-Day +1. Initially Andy and his followers are only a handful, but as the days go on, more and more people join as they are rescued. By the end of the first week, Andy’s Hunting Emporium is home to about 20. The group is strongest in the time leading up to the climactic struggle with the Mouth Bleeders. Eventually overrun by a mass of regular zombies, the survivors fled into Sand Canyon.

Army of God

Group organized by the Archangel Michael to fight the good fight against evil. See Michael Sparks below.

A small but growing religious group at the prison. Individuals demonstrate their religious fervor and seek atonement for their sins by vigorously whipping themselves in public displays of penance. Through this act they hope to achieve redemption. Three days before Easter a filipino flagellent named Emilio went through a voluntary cruxifiction after a re-enactment of the Passion.

Status currently unknown after the defeat of the prison by the zombie horde and mop up by the Army of God.

Gaiten Academy

Robert Saunders is the son of a state senator; Takashi Miyamoto is the (disowned) son of a powerful Japanese executive. In this area, one of the hallmarks of a “proper” upbringing is a Gaiten Academy education. Many alumni of Gaiten have gone on to Ivy League schools. This group is comprised of the faculty of Gaiten Academy, its privileged, “silver spoon” students and their families. This is the largest group with the best resources and starting location, but the least ability to defend those resources against an organized attack. There are about 250 people within the walls of Gaiten Academy, but the overwhelming majority is incapable of fighting any kind of battle. Many are middle and high school aged students. Among the students, the “Outkasts” led by Saunders and Miyamoto and the Polo Club led by Saunders have proved exceptionally resourceful in resupplying and defending the Academy. Saunders and Miyamoto are the true leaders at Gaiten. The people at Gaiten Academy hope Z-Day and its changes to the world are only temporary and things will eventually return to “normal”. However, unlike those at the NG Post who are waiting to be “saved”, the Gaiten Kids are planning for the future. Their overwhelming attitude can be summed up simply as “hope for the best, but plan for the worst.”

They are currently receiving spiritual guidance from Angel Trudi and the Reverend.

KZED Folks

Most of the survivors at KZED Radio came here because they heard DJ Grant Jazzy either on KZED Radio or on CB Channel 9 and they realized that they didn’t have a defensible position at home. They are spread out between the radio station compound and KGON TV station*. These folks would like things to return to normal, but don’t believe the government or military will swoop in with a solution, such as the people at NG Post believe. The survivors at KZED Radio follow the credo “The Lord helps those who help themselves.” Like Andy and his braves, they believe it is foolish to wait for someone to “come save them”; they believe a new future can be built if they stand together and work hard. This is one of the most combat capable groups. Almost half of the 50 or so folks here know how to use a weapon. Unfortunately that didn’t stop them from being almost wiped out on March 19th by marauders. Now the voice of KZED radio is Rev. Thompson.

*On Z-Day, Kurt Jackson, the KGON TV Channel 9 weather person, violently snapped after the KGON traffic helicopter crashed. He had been watching the chaotic scene playing out in town when the shock wave from an explosion caught the helicopter. Kurt did not see the crash, he only saw the monitors showing the crazy spinning camera view being broadcast from the helicopter. Kurt went to his car, got his 9mm Beretta out of the glove box and walked back into KGON TV. He walked throughout the facility and shot absolutely everyone he could find, apologizing to them as he pulled the trigger again and again. He only wanted to spare them the pain and suffering that he now knew and believed everyone would know. As his victims died of their wounds the resulting zombies only added to the death toll. A few employees managed to escape to KZED with their lives and the story of what happened.

Lethal Interjection Crew

The Lethal Interjection Crew is a rap group started by Thugnificent and his homies Macktastic and Flo. Their rise to stardom was interrupted by the Zombie Apocalypse and they currently reside in the Winchester Mystery House as muscle for Alain.

  • Otis Jenkins, stage name Thugnificent (voiced by Carl Jones): A once-famous rapper and Riley Freeman’s most recent idol, Thugnificent hails from the fictional town of Terra-Belle,Georgia. He is loud-mouthed and sports afro puffs.
  • Macktastic (voiced by Snoop Dogg): A rapper, and member of Thugnificent’s Lethal Interjection crew.
  • Flonominal, real name Derick (voiced by Busta Rhymes): A rapper, and member of Thugnificent’s Lethal Interjection crew. He resigns from the Lethal Interjection in “Bitches to Rags” when Thugnificent is unable to pay for the house and when Thugnificent gets him fired from a job as an office worker. In this episode, however, he is not voiced by Busta Rhymes.
  • Leonard (voiced by DeRay Davis): Thugnificent’s dim yet well-meaning friend and member of Thugnificent’s Lethal Interjection Crew. Although Leonard was treated as a second-class member of the Lethal Interjection Crew — mostly due to his penchant for being socially awkward — he is the only member of the crew to stick with Thugnificent when he lost all of his money.

Maris the Great and the Faggots of Death

Maris the Great

National Guard Depot / Motor Pool

Not just National Guard, this group includes Sheriff Anderson (until he was gunned down) and two of his deputies, Capt. Niccotero, and any National Guardsman-mechanics still alive, Simon Tool (and Dog), some VFW members, a few experienced scavenger groups, and survivors who haven’t transitioned to the prison yet. The leadership intends to see the previous status quo returned and is working on the assumption that the current state may last six months to a year, but after that the government will arrive with a cure or a vaccine and save everyone and life will go back to normal. These people have true faith in the system and see much of what is going on post Z-Day as “criminal anarchy”. About 30 people were here, almost all are capable of combat.

The National Guard was taken over by Michael who staged his Army of God there for awhile. FBI Agent Pita Cruz briefly joined and spied on the group here.

Large correctional facility run by Warden Hightower who reports to the military leadership. In addition it currently is home to large numbers of survivors.

See Tehachapi Prison

The Pythons Motorcycle Club is the largest bike gang in the region. They are known to be a support or “puppet club” of the Hells Angles. Before Z-Day the Pythons were into protection rackets and drug running in addition to general mayhem and chaos. Membership in the club (with hangers on) prior to Z-Day was just shy of 50, but less (40 or so) were in town. Besides losses due to zombies, they have been in a running war with the 18th Street Gang. How large the group is now, is unknown. Killface, the leader of the Pythons, never wants things to go back to the way they were. He considers himself a post-apocalypse Viking king and champion of “racial purity”. Killface wants to gather surviving members of The Pythons to consolidate their power over the area. The Pythons follow that old credo — Live free or die.

Python members in the prison system ally with the Aryan Brotherhood. The Aryan Brotherhood, also known as the Brand, the AB, Alice Baker, or the One-Two, is a white supremacist prison gang and organized crime syndicate in the United States with about 10,000 members in and out of prison. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the gang makes up less than 0.1% of the prison population, but it is responsible for up to 20% of murders in the federal prison system. The AB has focused on the economic activities typical of organized crime entities, particularly drug trafficking, extortion, inmate prostitution, and murder-for-hire.

The Pythons have visited the prison demanding the release of their brothers. Later they pulled off a successful nighttime attack on the level 2 and 4 prison complexes. Prisoner and zombies were released. Since then, they haven’t really been seen.

Age: 45, 5’ 8", 165lb, black hair, dark skin
Role: Bokor, Baby Doc Duvalier’s man on the West Coast.

Andy Bearstalker

Age: 35, 5’ 10", 165lb, black hair, amber eyes, med dark skin
Role: Native-American Hunter/Scout

Andy put the boys and girls to work around his place and “paid” them in ancient lore taught to him by his grandfather. Andy was raised by his grandfather, John Moon-stealer, who served in WW2 as a tracker and ranger and was in-turn trained by his grandfather, who was a cavalry scout in the 1870’s. Andy is a font of hunting, scouting and survival lore. The two tours of duty that Andy did in Iraq, before returning home to open his hunting shop, did nothing but sharpen his natural instincts.

Andy and his braves were nearly an organized force before Z-Day occurred because they often hunted and practiced various crafts together. Since then, they have been working as a search and rescue group. Many of the survivors staying at Andy’s Hunting Emporium owe their lives to Andy and his braves. Andy only demands that everyone pull his or her weight. Within 45 days, Andy and his braves are a tight-knit group of cold, hard and pragmatic warriors. He and four of the best braves were instrumental in defending Tae Go Sah and putting down Rock Baby. Together they are intent upon saving humanity, but they do not tolerate racism, bullying or any disrespect from one person to another. Punishment is harsh: one warning and exile after the second offense.

DJ Grant Jazzy

Age: 46, 6’, 173 lb, black hair, blue eyes, med dark skin
Role: Radio DJ

Since Z-Day, Grant has become the program director of KZED, as well as the DJ and lookout. Every morning, Grant
carefully climbs the radio tower and scouts the area as best he can. Afterwards he does the morning show, in which he gives the news, the daily zed report, public service announcements about how to make improvised weapons, Post-Zombocalypse Do’s and Don’ts and how best to kill zombies. He also shares what limited information he gets from the outside world via a shortwave radio at the station. Jazzy was shot to death during an attack on the radio station on March 19th, 2013.

Age: 28, 5’ 8", 180 lb, brown hair, black eyes, sallow skin
Role: Genetic Scientist

Drew is a scientist formerly employed by a startup in Ventura, California. His work revolved around engineering a better avocado. His company was hoping to bring the first super avocado to market.

He took a stray round in the gunfight with the Pythons at the ranch house. He died but appears to have already been dead. He had a grievous, unhealed chest injury from before the fight and it smelled bad. Was he undead? Did he know it?

Capt. Greg Niccotero

Age: 46, 6’, 173 lb, black hair, blue eyes, med dark skin
Role: Shattered National Guardsman

Capt. Niccotero is the quiet and haunted leader of the local National Guard depot / motor pool. Under martial law he is also in charge of all the civilians in the area – a responsibility he largely delegated to the mayor and sheriff. To the best of his knowledge all his friends and family are gone and not that many of his guardsman-mechanics remain. Greg doesn’t have any reason to live, except for his sense of duty. Duty prevents him from taking his own life and keeps him on guard and protecting the survivors and resources of the Guard Depot that he now commands. Duty is everything.

Pita Cruz reported that he was killed when the Michael took over the post.

James “Jimmy D” Delemorte IV

Age: 25, 6’ 1", 183 lb, black hair, brown eyes, pale skin
Role: Creepy Millionaire / Undertaker

James Delemorte IV never wanted to be an undertaker. He was known throughout his time at Gaiten Academy as “Jimmy D” and the class clown. He spent as much time as he could with friends and away from home because he HATED dead things. Yet, after he graduated from Gaiten, he went into a mortician’s apprenticeship with his dad and became a very different person. Almost a year later, James Delemorte III passed away. At his father’s funeral, the people of Mortiston saw James Delemorte IV for the first time since his graduation in 1984, although he displayed no emotion. He seems “dead” to anyone who knew him before. He began serving the community of Mortiston as its main mortician at that time.

Since Z-Day and until the generators ran out, James Delemorte IV had been throwing one hell of a party. He is crazier than snow in Texas on the 4th of July and (for whatever reason) he is immune to being a target for zombies. The walking dead just ignore him.

He hadn’t been seen since being released from the barn by Dr Graves and Xanthos until the group went back to the mansion and found him at the caretaker’s residence. He and his undead sex slaves were later killed by Trevor and Dr. Graves.

Weird old eastern European woman that looks like a homeless person and is evidently a Zombie Lord. She commands the Hungry Dead. Resides in the local library with her “children” and the Bookwyrm. See Nicodemus the Bookwyrm. She had the top of her head blown off but somehow survived (somewhat worse for the ordeal) and hates Trevor for it.

Michael Sparks

Leader of the Army of God. After Z-day, God sent Michael’s brother, the Archangel Gabriel, to tell Michael that his exile from Heaven was nearly complete. God only requires Michael to perform two small tasks before returning to his Heavenly Glory. God has sent a plague to punish the wicked, godless inhabitants of Earth, but Satan had agents hidden among the humans for many eons. Unfortunately, some of the Righteous are among the demons of Satan, but they will recognize a true Champion of God and join his cause.

The tasks Michael says he must accomplish are
1) Destroy the Agents of Satan, and
2) Save the Righteous, especially the children.

Michael is mentioned three times in the Book of Daniel, once as a “great prince who stands up for the children of your people”. The idea that Michael was the advocate of the Jews became so prevalent that in spite of the rabbinical prohibition against appealing to angels as intermediaries between God and his people, Michael came to occupy a certain place in the Jewish liturgy.

In the New Testament Michael leads God’s armies against Satan’s forces in the Book of Revelation, where during the war in heaven he defeats Satan. In the Epistle of Jude Michael is specifically referred to as “the archangel Michael”. Christian sanctuaries to Michael appeared in the 4th century, when he was first seen as a healing angel, and then over time as a protector and the leader of the army of God against the forces of evil. By the 6th century, devotions to Archangel Michael were widespread both in the Eastern and Western Churches. Over time, teachings on Michael began to vary among Christian denominations.

The Book of Revelation (12:7-9) describes a war in heaven in which Michael, being stronger, defeats Satan:

there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.

After the conflict, Satan is thrown to earth along with the fallen angels, where he (“that ancient serpent called the devil”) still tries to “lead the whole world astray”.

Separately, in the Epistle of Jude 1:9 Michael is specifically referred to as an “archangel” when he again confronts Satan:

Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses

A reference to an “archangel” also appears in the First Epistle to the Thessalonians 4:16

the Lord himself shall descend from heaven, with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first

This version is from the American Standard Version of 1901, a version that uses the definite article, “the archangel”, absent in the original Greek and in English translations (such as the English Standard Version of 2001, which has:

the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God.

This archangel who heralds the second coming of Christ is not named, but is probably Michael.

Minister Roberts (aka “the Minister” or “the Preacher”)

A true believing Methodist Preacher. He is another rabble rouser who has adopted the persona of an anachronistic preacher from the days of circuit riding. He leads the devout Christian contingent at the prison using speeches of fire and brimstone to whip his flock into a righteous fury. His staunchest supporter is a mean old nun by the name of Sister Joan Hiller. Arrested by Archangel Michael and removed from the prison. Michael “arranged a meeting between them and the Maker”. Later three of the group were shown the crucified remains of the two hanging in the Garden of Woe alongside DJ Grant Jazzy and Esperanza at the radio station.

Nicodemus the Bookwyrm

Apparently a DnD nerd living out his fantasy in the Tehachapi library which he has trapped and filled with monsters. See Lamashtu. Made a deal with Rev. Thompson: occult books for a yearly virgin sacrifice.

Reverend Jeremiah Thompson

New DJ at KZED radio and pastor of the Church of Everlasting Hope. Preachy. Star of Rapping with the Rev and Associate of Michael Sparks. Organized the children’s Revelation Choir. Michael’s charismatic mouthpiece and frontman.

Sister Joan Hiller (aka “the nun”)

Associate of Minister Roberts the Methodist Preacher. Arrested by Archangel Michael and removed from the prison. Michael has “arranged a meeting between her and the Maker”. Crucified.

Associate of Michael Sparks that also claims to be an Angel.

Verne and Rhona

Age: 35, 4’ 6", 130 lb, black hair, black eyes, goatee, pale skin
Role: Patent Lawyer / candidate for mayor

Age: 31, 5’ 10", 140 lb, brown hair, brown eyes, tan skin
Role: Prison guard / campaign volunteer

Verne is an agitator among the survivors at the prison. He fled from LA with his wife and kids to Golden Hills where his parents had a house. Not feeling safe there he was one of the first to seek refuge at the prison. The rabble rouser came to prominence at the food truck riot where he called for the immediate equitable distribution of the food. His message resonated with the hungry crowd and things got ugly. In the aftermath of the riot he was joined by Rhona, a prison guard horribly wounded by Ronnie Jerimiah’s hammer and who shot at Ronnie to stop him from firing into the crowd. She is another voice against the heavy handed tactics of the warden. Together they called for a recall election of Mayor Quimby who they claim to be totally ineffective in looking out for the civilian population and a tool of the military government and the warden.

See Recall Election.

Warden Hightower

Briefly met by Joanne and Marcel after they were released from jail.

Veteran of the California Correctional System and long time warden at CCI. He isn’t often seen and has developed a reputation for being aloof and uncaring. At least that is how Mayor Weideman and Rhona tell it.
