Description

The Indian Point Ostrich Ranch was founded by Joel Brust in March, 1992, on the former ranch and home site of Milo and Marjean Sprinkle of the Sprinkle Brothers Cattle Company. Many of the original buildings and structures that supported the Sprinkle family and the cattle operation from the 1940’s through the 1970’s remain in use today.

It is interesting to note, that since ostrich produce red meat and leather similar to beef, the ranch still continues to produce red meat and leather, but from a different species.

Ostrich steaks and burgers are processed under USDA inspection and are packed and sold under Indian Point’s own “Blue Feather” brand. The leather is sold or brokered to the hide market.

Shortly after the ranch’s founding, a selective breeding program was initiated to produce breeding stock that was friendly, and manageable. Indian Point ostrich breeders can be found as far away as Thailand and Canada and throughout the western United States

The entire Tehachapi operation totals 80 acres including a 60 acre mountain side ranch and a separate 20 acre farm divided by a county road. The ranch contains two natural springs, an oak and pine forest and provides beautiful vistas of the entire Cummings Valley. The ranch primarily produces meat and leather and offers breeding stock for sale. The ranch opened to the public for tours in 1997.

In addition to the ranching supplies and what was left behind in the two homes and trailer, the ranch is also home to The Ostrich Nest gift store with a wide ranch of ostrich related merchandise.

Current Situation

After being freed from well armed squatters, the ranch became home base for an eclectic group of survivors including the deposed mayor.

“So interesting!”
Reviewed May 20, 2014

We loved that the guide was extremely knowledgeable and the info was all so interesting. Unfortunately she spoke extremely fast so we missed lots of what she had to say. Just go and enjoy being so close to such amazing birds: the largest on earth!

This place is unbelievable, educational and fun. Be sure to bring your kids. The ride there is just as fun, all will enjoy. Not expensive at all. One of Tehachapi’s attractions. You will learn about the great birds you didn’t know at all. A pure nature trip.

“Yup, they got ostriches”

It’s OK – not good or great. Some interesting trivia about ostriches provided by tour guide. Can’t complain about $4 per person but I wouldn’t drive a great distance to get here. Fine if you’re close by. FYI to those who read review mentioning “highlight of trip was photo” of child “riding an ostrich”. No one gets to ride an… More

We had a private tour with owner Joel who was very pleasant & informative. It was fun ‘meeting’ Ralph the ostrich featured in Fear Factor show & music video. They offered a small gift shop; tours are $4 pp. Was interesting. Love the ostrich oil & its healing properties.

“NOT WORTH THE GAS”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

Save your gas and look up ostrich on Wikipedia, then go to one of the other attractions in Tehachapi. I guess some people would find it interesting but we did not. I would spend my time and take my guests to the loop or the train depot or one of the wineries. Save your gas money and bring something to… More

What a great time our family had at the Indian Point Ostrich Ranch. The yound lady that led us on our tour was knowledgeable, sweet and funny. The highlight of our entire two week trip was when my daughter had her photo taken riding and ostrich.
